Try these typical Bulgarian breakfast – it’s similar to doughnuts but way easier to make 🙂
- 600 g all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 1 tbsp dry yeast
- 600 ml warm water
- sunflower or vegetable oil, for frying
- Combine all dry ingredients in a bowl. Add water and mix, until a thick dough forms. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and leave in the fridge over night (or at least for 6 hours).
- Get a deep saucepan and half fill it with oil. Place over high heat and wait for the oil to heat. Get a small bowl and put some oil in it – you’ll use it to oil your hands, so the dough doesn’t stick. Take the dough out of the fridge. It should be triple in volume and very sticky.
- Oil your hands and take a handful of the dough. Stretch it with your fingers to form a thin layer, and put in the saucepan. Fry until golden brown, turning halfway. Take out and put on tissue paper to drain the excess oil. Serve hot, sprinkled with confectioners sugar, with jam, honey or chocolate spread.
